The Tripura Assembly Elections 2018 were held on February 18th, 2018 to elect the members of the Tripura Legislative Assembly. The state of Tripura has a unicameral legislature with a total of 60 seats. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) had been in power in Tripura for the past 25 years, but the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as a strong challenger in this election.

The BJP campaigned heavily in the state, with the support of the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) and promised to bring development and end the “misrule” of the Left Front government. On the other hand, the CPI(M) campaigned on its development works and welfare schemes for the people of Tripura.

The results of the election were declared on March 3rd, 2018 and the BJP emerged victorious by winning 35 seats, while its ally IPFT won 8 seats. The CPI(M) was reduced to just 16 seats. This was a major defeat for the CPI(M) and marked the end of their 25-year long rule in the state.

The BJP’s victory in Tripura was significant as it was the first time in 25 years that the saffron party has come to power in the northeastern state. The BJP’s victory in Tripura also marked a significant shift in the political landscape of the northeastern region, which has traditionally been a Left-leaning region.

Biplab Deb Became CM in 2018


The newly elected chief minister of Tripura, Biplab Kumar Deb, took oath on March 9th, 2018 and formed the government with the support of the IPFT.
